From an Idea to a Shop - A Grand Opening

Three years ago Nightjar was an idea I brought home from Finland. On December 10, we open the doors of the shop where every Nightjar is built. Come celebrate with us.

From an Idea to a Shop - A Grand Opening

A note from David on the Nightjar shop grand opening, December 10

In the spring of 2023, Nightjar became a much clearer vision after spending a week in Finland. I sat in saunas that had been fired the same way for generations. I'd watched strangers turn into friends in the heat, then walk down to the lake together. It was not a fad, it was a way of life.  Sauna was about to take off.

So I started in a 1,700-square-foot shop in Wyoming with a few tools, a lot of cedar, and more conviction than sense. We built one sauna, then another. We figured out how to do it right, then how to do it better.

Three years later, I walk into a 16,000-square-foot shop on Burton Street and I still can't quite believe it. We've got a talented crew and we're building nearly two saunas a week. Our saunas have gone all over the country, most recently craned over a house in Texas. The building used to make concrete grave vaults. Now it's full of cedar, steel, and guys who care about every angle.

That's not luck. Every sauna that's gone out of here has been a gift, and I don't take any of it for granted. This shop is stewardship. We were given something, and we're building on it.

Come celebrate with us

On Thursday, December 10, we're opening the doors. It's the grand opening of the shop where every Nightjar is built, and the night we launch the Nightjar cold plunge, three years in the making.

Come try our saunas. We'll have one running hot in the gym and one outside by the fire. Take the plunge. Walk the shop floor with the guys who build every sauna, and see what hand-built in Michigan really looks like. We'll have a traditional sauna table with sausages off the grill, smoked fish, and pickled and salty bites, plus drinks. We're giving away Nightjar gear all night, and one of you is going home with a Nightjar Travel Sauna experience.

This is a night to celebrate. For me it's a dream I'm watching come true, and I want you there for it.

Thursday, December 10 · 4–8 PM
1175 Burton St SE, Grand Rapids
Ribbon cutting at 4:45. Bring a swimsuit.

See you in the heat.
