Keeping Cold Plunge Water Clean

Why it gets dirty, what's actually happening in there, and exactly what to do about it.

A cold plunge is a small amount of water that human bodies get into. That's the whole challenge in one sentence. Understand what a body brings with it and how the water responds, and keeping a plunge clean stops being guesswork and becomes a simple routine.

01 — What's actually in the water

A typical plunge holds 60–130 gallons. A hot tub holds around 400; a backyard pool, 15,000 or more. That small volume is your buffer — and every plunger adds sweat, body oil, skin cells, lotion, sunscreen, and bacteria.

One person a day in 125 gallons is nothing. Thirty people a day in the same water is a completely different system. This is the key idea everything below builds on:

The calendar doesn't dirty your water — people do. How often you shock, drain, and swap filters is driven by how many bodies went in, not how many days passed.

02 — How chlorine behaves in cold water

Cold water changes chlorine two ways. It works more slowly — disinfection is a chemical reaction, and reactions slow as temperature drops. But it's far more stable — heat is what burns chlorine off (why hot tubs devour sanitizer). A cold plunge is the opposite environment: chlorine holds its residual and keeps working. Slower to act, but it stays.

The bigger lever is pH. Chlorine's active, germ-killing form depends heavily on pH:

At pH 8.0, most of your chlorine is idle. If chlorine seems weak, pH is usually why — not temperature. Holding 7.2–7.4 can roughly double the effectiveness of chemistry you're already paying for.

03 — Why water smells, and what it means

Clean chlorinated water barely smells. That sharp "pool" odor is chloramines — chlorine bound up with sweat, oil, and urine. Which leads to a rule opposite most people's instinct:

A strong chlorine smell means not enough working chlorine — not too much.

The fix is to oxidize the waste, not cut the sanitizer. Weekly non-chlorine shock (MPS) burns off organic load before chloramines form. Water that already smells needs breakpoint chlorination — a high dose, after hours. (Note: MPS can read as combined chlorine on test kits right after dosing.)

04 — What a filter does, and doesn't

A filter has one job, and it isn't sanitation. Bacteria (0.5–2 microns) pass straight through a 20-micron cartridge; dissolved body oils pass through everything. A filter delivers clarity — hair, skin flakes, debris.

Clear water and clean water aren't the same thing. Filtration gives clarity; chemistry and water exchange give sanitation. You need all three.

Two habits: soak cartridges in filter degreaser rather than hosing (a rinse leaves oil behind — that's why cartridges stay gray), and rotate two cartridges so one is always drying fully. A dry cartridge is a spare; a damp one in a bin is not.

05 — Choosing a filter: 20µm vs 50µm

Finer isn't automatically better — it's clarity vs. flow, and flow matters more than it looks. As a cartridge clogs, flow falls, meaning fewer turnovers and less water reaching your ozone and sanitizer. A clogged 20µm moves less water than a clean 50µm.

The practical call: high-traffic commercial (20+/day) → 50µm workhorse, spend your effort on chemistry and exchange. Residential and light studio → 20µm, clarity is the priority and it won't get hammered.

06 — Biofilm: why cloudiness comes back

Cloudy again days after a fresh fill? The source usually isn't the tub — it's the plumbing. Biofilm is a slime layer bacteria build inside lines, pump, and jets; it shields them from normal sanitizer levels, and it reseeds every fresh fill.

The pipe purge: dose a dedicated line cleaner (like Oh Yuk) with the tub full → circulate 4–6 hours → drain, rinse, refill. Quarterly on schedule; monthly under heavy commercial traffic. Do it on the calendar, before you can see a problem.

07 — Ozone, and measuring your turnover

Ozone is a strong oxidizer with one limit worth understanding: it only treats water passing through the chamber and leaves nothing behind in the tub. While someone is plunging, the water touching them has no active protection. At low use, fine; at high use, that's where problems start — and most health codes require a residual sanitizer for public plunges.

Ozone and chlorine cancel each other, so commercial operators should run ozone on a timer during closed hours and let the residual stand guard while open.

The bucket test — measure circulation in ten minutes, no tools: divert the return line into a 5-gallon bucket and time the fill. GPM = 300 ÷ seconds to fill. Turnover (minutes) = gallons ÷ GPM. A 125-gallon plunge at 15 GPM turns over in ~8 minutes — comfortably inside the 30-minute public spa code.

THE PROTOCOL

The one rule that does half the work: everyone rinses before they plunge. Sweat, oil, lotion, and sunscreen fuel every problem on this page. The pre-rinse costs nothing and roughly doubles your water's effective capacity. Post the sign. Hold the standard.

Daily: look at the water (clarity, film, odor) · test pH 7.2–7.4 and free chlorine 0.5–1 ppm (commercial) · skim debris

Weekly: non-chlorine shock (MPS) · deep-clean or rotate filter (soak, don't hose) · wipe waterline · check alkalinity 80–120 ppm

Quarterly: purge the plumbing (Section 06).

The hierarchy of clean, in order of impact: 1. Source control (pre-rinse) → 2. Oxidation (residual + shock) → 3. Dilution (water exchange) → 4. Biofilm purge → 5. Filtration.
