What makes the Nightjar Cold Plunge different?
Three things nobody else combines. It's genuine commercial equipment — 1 HP chiller, stainless tub, powder-coated aluminum frame, 170-gallon capacity — not a residential unit dressed up. It's the tenth generation of our design; nine versions of real-world iteration on filtration, sanitation, and cold-holding came before it. And it's clad in the same Grade A cedar as our saunas, by the same hands — a sauna and cold plunge designed together, as one installation, from one shop.
What is it made of?
A stainless steel tub set in a powder-coated aluminum frame (it will never rust — aluminum doesn't), fully integrated plumbing, and hand-selected premium Grade A cedar cladding. The tub's single slanted side sits at the mechanical end, where all three water penetrations live — every visible side stays clean and sealed. Finished in natural cedar, black, or a custom stain. Built by hand in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
What does "tenth generation" mean?
We've built and shipped nine prior versions of this plunge. Every one taught us something we folded back into the design — pump longevity, filter access, freeze protection, ozone tuning, lid insulation. V10 isn't a redesign; it's an accumulation. How cold does it get?
36°F to 60°F+, fully adjustable, held with commercial precision. Most people start at 50–55°F; the seasoned crowd lives in the mid-40s and below. The chiller holds temperature — it doesn't chase it.
Why does 170 gallons matter?
Water volume is the most underrated spec in this category. Small volume is why most plunge water goes bad: every swimmer's sweat, oil, and skin lands in a smaller buffer. At 170 gallons total — where the category's best-known plunges hold 105–110 — a Nightjar stays colder between sessions, keeps chemistry stable, and handles multiple daily users without drama.

Installation & Electrical
Do I need an electrician?
Usually not. The plunge runs on a dedicated outdoor 110–120V, 20A GFCI circuit — standard in most homes. Per national electrical code, the circuit must be dedicated. (Saunas are different: those need a 50A non-GFCI breaker. We'll walk you through both on your consultation call.)
What surface does it need?
Flat, level, rated for ~1,400 lbs full, with 12 inches of clearance at the chiller for airflow and good drainage nearby. Concrete, pavers, and reinforced decking all work — and because these are heavy, wide units, we confirm doorways, gates, and the path in before delivery.
Indoors or outdoors?
Both, year-round, in both extremes — sized to loaf through Texas and Gulf-South summers, freeze-proof through Michigan winters. The pump circulates 24/7, which is what keeps pipes freeze-proof.
How does it arrive and how long does setup take?
Fully assembled — longer hauls ship crated, and the only assembly is the handle. Place it, fill with a garden hose to the etched line (about 10 minutes), plug in, set your temperature. Under 30 minutes to plunging, same day. Full setup guide.
Can I use an extension cord?
Use the included cord where possible. If you need longer, use a cord rated for the full 20A circuit — heavy-duty, outdoor-rated. No light-duty cords, no daisy chains.
Water Quality & Sanitation
How does the water stay clean?
For residential use, the system is complete as delivered: continuous circulation, commercial cartridge filtration for clarity, and an integrated ozone system on programmed cycles for sanitation — designed to keep a home plunge clean on ozone alone, no added chemicals. Is it chemical-free?
For normal residential use — yes, by design. The plunge is engineered to run on its integrated ozone system alone: continuous circulation, programmed ozone cycles, and the rinse-before-you-plunge habit keep home water clean without added chemicals. Once bather load climbs — a studio, a gym, a commercial floor — the water has to be treated differently: health codes require a residual sanitizer, and our water treatment plan shows exactly how to run one in cold water. How often do I change the water?
For home use: a full change every 1–3 months, or whenever the water starts looking cloudy — usually body oils and a loaded filter. The included submersible pump makes it a 20-minute job. Higher traffic changes by bather load, not the calendar — the full table is in the water guide.
Why do you publish your water chemistry?
Because we can. Ten generations in, we know exactly how this system behaves under load, and a customer who understands their water is a customer whose plunge stays flawless. Almost no one in this category shows their work — we show all of it. That's not an accident.
Ownership & Maintenance
What does maintenance actually involve?
About five minutes a week — check water quality and flow, skim, confirm the pump's hum. The CNC-routed Starboard top over the mechanical bay gives tool-free access to the filter and timers: filter swap every 1–3 months, five minutes, no tools. Who can service it?
Any pool and spa technician — standard parts, accessible mechanical bay, no proprietary lockouts. But start with a call to us: we built your unit by hand and usually diagnose by phone in minutes.
What about winter?
Run it — that's what it's built for. Moving water doesn't freeze, and the unit is designed to operate through hard winters. Shutting down seasonally instead? Drain fully, disconnect hoses, store chiller and pump indoors. Never leave it full and unplugged in freezing weather.

What's the warranty?
10 years on the stainless tub and aluminum frame (limited warranty). 2 years on the chiller, pump, ozone system, and electrical. 2 years on craftsmanship — cedar cladding, finish, and joinery. Plus a 30-day satisfaction guarantee (return freight and a 25% restocking fee apply). Coverage is for defects; damage caused by dry-run pumps, punctures, salt or Epsom additives, or freezing while unplugged isn't covered — but we repair damage at a fair charge. How do warranty claims work?
Call or email us with photos and your build number. Most issues resolve with a shipped part and a walkthrough; anything bigger, we make it right. We're a builder, not a brand — the unit has our name on it and we act like it.

Is it truly commercial-rated?
It is the commercial unit — we don't make a lighter one. 170-gallon buffer, commercial chiller and filtration, lockable lid, tamper-proof controls, and sanitation configurable for high bather loads.
Will it pass health department review?
Our water protocol is written around public spa standards — turnover, residual sanitizer, documented maintenance. We support your permitting conversation with documentation on request.

How do I buy one?

6–8 weeks, hand-built to order. Shipping runs from $250 depending on distance and crating.
Can it match my existing sauna?
If it's a Nightjar, perfectly — same cedar, same stain, same builder. If it's not a Nightjar... this might be the beginning of fixing that.

Who should talk to a doctor first?
Anyone pregnant, with cardiovascular conditions, blood pressure issues, respiratory conditions, or on circulation-affecting medication. Cold water is a genuine physiological stressor — that's why it works, and why it deserves respect.
Basic safety rules?
Never plunge alone. Never under the influence. Keep the lid locked around kids and pets. If shivering becomes confusion or slowed breathing, get out immediately. Start with 1–2 minutes and build.
