Outdoor Saunas in Michigan

Hand-built outdoor saunas and cold plunges from our shop in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Every Nightjar is built to order, one board at a time, out of Michigan white cedar, and delivered by the same crew that built it.

We build about two saunas a week. That's on purpose. A sauna that has to live through a Michigan winter, year after year, doesn't get rushed.

Built for Michigan Winters

A sauna in Michigan isn't a summer toy. January is when it earns its keep. Here's what that means for how we build:

  • Michigan white cedar. It grows in our own swamps, it handles heat and moisture better than almost anything, and it's comfortable to lean on at 190°F. Why we build with it.
  • A base that won't rot. Every Nightjar sits on a custom powder-coated aluminum base. No wood in the dirt, no rot from the bottom up. More on that.
  • Real heat. IKI stoves loaded with Finnish sauna stones, so you get proper löyly, not a hot closet.
  • Three benches. High enough to sit in the hot steam, with lower benches for kids and newcomers. The löyly pocket, explained.
  • Built to sit outside. Outdoor only, always. The walk from the heat into the cold Michigan air is half the experience. Why outdoor wins.

Saunas Named for the Places We Love

  • The Petoskey — our compact sauna, for couples and smaller yards.
  • The Manistee — the traditional sauna most of our customers end up in. Three benches, room for the family.
  • The Nordhouse — ten feet of bench for six to eight adults. The gathering sauna.
  • The Mackinac — the Manistee with a changing room, 12 feet overall. Made for cold climates.
  • The Charlevoix — 14 feet: hot room, changing room, and a covered porch.
  • The Nightjar Cold Plunge — 170 gallons, stainless tub, commercial chiller. Built to hold its temperature summer and winter.
