Why Nightjar?

When I first fell in love with sauna, I became consumed with learning everything I could about it. I wanted to understand not just how to build one, but what made the experience truly authentic. That journey led me to meet Sami, to travel to Finland, and ultimately, to discover the name that would define everything we do.

During my research, I was reading everything I could get my hands on—books about Finnish sauna culture, technical guides, personal accounts. One writer described the perfect sauna experience simply: a hot sauna, a cold lake to swim in, and the call of the nightjar.

The nightjar is a nocturnal bird, very common in Finland but rarely found here in the United States. It has an incredibly distinctive call—rhythmic and unmistakable:

Right when I heard it, I knew it was the right name. I didn't question it. Sauna is often used at night. The stillness, the stars, the ritual of heat and cold under the cover of darkness. The name felt meant to be.

More Than Hot and Cold

Here's what the call of the nightjar means to us: Yes, when we build, we know the sauna must be hot. And yes, the cold plunge must be cold. Those are non-negotiables—the fundamentals of what we do.

But the call of the nightjar? That's the experience.

It's not just about the build. It's about what happens when you step inside. It's about the ritual, the community, the moment of peace at the end of a long day. It's the sound of water on hot stones, the shock of cold water, the conversation with friends, the silence with yourself.

The nightjar's call is a reminder that we're not just manufacturing wellness equipment. We're creating the conditions for something deeper—for restoration, for connection, for those moments that make you feel truly alive.

That's why Nightjar. Because from the very beginning, this has been about honoring the complete experience.
