Part 3 covered the few easy things you actually do. This one's for the part of you that wants to understand — because understanding is where confidence comes from. Once you know what's happening in that water and why your Nightjar is built to handle it, you stop guessing and start reading your plunge like someone who's been doing this for years.

This isn't a to-do list. It's the knowledge that lets you relax. Your system does the work; this is how it works, and how to read it like a pro.

Here's the whole thing in one sentence: a cold plunge is a small amount of water that human bodies get into. Understand what a body brings and how the water responds, and everything else clicks into place.

What's actually in the water

A typical plunge holds 60–130 gallons. A hot tub holds around 400; a backyard pool holds 15,000 or more. Every plunger adds a little sweat, body oil, skin, lotion, and sunscreen. That's the entire challenge, and it's a small one.

Here's the key idea, and it's freeing: the calendar doesn't dirty your water — people do. Water sitting in a well-run plunge doesn't 'go off' on a schedule. What changes the water is how many bodies go in. One person a day in 125 gallons is nothing. Which means for most owners, staying ahead of it is genuinely effortless — and your machine is already doing most of that work for you.

Why your Nightjar handles it for you

This is the part people don't realize they can lean on. Your plunge isn't a passive bucket — it's a running system:

  • Continuous circulation. The pump never stops, so your entire volume passes through filtration and ozone many times an hour. Ozone is a strong oxidizer that neutralizes contaminants as water flows through the chamber — the same method used to disinfect municipal drinking water, and it works far faster than chlorine. How to read your water like a pro

The real pro skill isn't chemistry — it's reading the water. It's always telling you something, and there are only three signals to learn:

Clarity. Clear water is your system working. If it drifts cloudy and a filter swap doesn't fix it, that's your cue it's time to refresh the water.

Smell. Clean water barely smells. If you ever catch a sharp 'pool' odor, here's the counterintuitive truth the pros know: that smell means the water is behind, not over-treated. It's a signal to refresh, not to add more of anything.

Feel and film. A slick waterline or a tired feel is just the water telling you it's carried enough bodies. Refresh it and reset.

Learn those three and you'll never be surprised by your plunge again. You'll glance at it and know.

The little bit of science, if you're curious

You don't need any of this for a home plunge on ozone — but it's genuinely interesting, and it makes you unshakeable if the topic ever comes up.

Cold water is actually a friend to sanitation. People assume cold makes chlorine 'not work.' Half true: cold slows reactions down, but it also makes chlorine far more stable — heat is what burns sanitizer off, which is why hot tubs devour it. Your cold plunge is the opposite environment. It holds its sanitation instead of gassing it away.

If you ever do add sanitizer, pH is the only lever that matters. Chlorine's germ-killing power swings hugely with pH:

Hold pH around 7.2–7.4 and you roughly double the punch of whatever you've added. A cheap test strip tells you where you stand in seconds. (CDC's pool and hot tub guidance puts the healthy range at pH 7.2–7.8.) Again — this is 'nice to know,' not 'need to do' for a home unit.

A filter gives clarity, not sanitation. Worth understanding so you never over-ask it: bacteria are far too small to catch, and dissolved oils pass through everything. The filter's job is to make water clear; the ozone and water changes keep it clean. Your Nightjar has all three bases covered, which is the whole point.

Running a studio or commercial setup?

If you've got real traffic — a gym, a studio, 20+ plunges a day — you're operating a different animal, and you scale the same system up with confidence. This is the professional protocol, and it's still built on the machine you already own:

  • Turn the ozone way up — and add a residual while you're open. The home schedule (20 minutes every 3 hours) isn't enough for real traffic. Bump the ozone up hard during your closed and overnight hours — think 30–45 minutes of every hour, or as close to continuous as your setup allows — so the water gets fully worked over between sessions. But keep ozone off while the plunge is in use: it off-gasses at the surface and it cancels out chlorine. Because ozone leaves nothing standing guard in the tub (and most health codes require a residual for public use), let a chlorine residual (pH 7.2–7.4, free chlorine 0.5–1 ppm) cover your open hours. A weekly non-chlorine shock keeps organic load from ever building up.
  • Post the pre-rinse rule and hold it. With volume, the pre-rinse is your single biggest lever — it roughly doubles your water's capacity for free.
  • Exchange water by bather load, not by the calendar:

  • Purge the plumbing quarterly. If cloudiness keeps returning after fresh fills, the culprit is biofilm in the lines — a slime layer that shelters bacteria from your sanitizer and is the reason poorly kept warm-water systems can cause skin issues like hot tub rash. Circulate a line cleaner for a few hours, then drain and refill. Do it on a schedule and you'll never see the problem.
  • Keep spare filters rotating. Swap and replace cartridges rather than nursing a loaded one; a clean filter keeps your flow — and your turnover — up.

Even at commercial scale, notice the theme: the machine does the continuous work, and you manage the inputs. That's operating like a pro.
